I think to say that it's "not possible to live, work and exist without the internet these days" is hyperbolic, but I agree that given the preeminence of online services for commerce of all sorts, to deny access verges on cruel and unusual punishment. Many view internet access as a fundamental right, so we should be very wary of impinging upon a person's access. Akin to denying firearms to felons, the punishment should be reserved for those who pose a danger.
