Help Us Identify the CTR Shills on Voat submitted by i_start_witch_hunts to whatever

laikaislost 13 points 34 points (+47|-13) ago

Look, most people getting called out for being CTR shills on voat are anything but. Find people paid to have opinions if you want, but if you just apply that label to anyone not aggressively pro Trump, you are going to wind up with an even bigger echo chamber than voat already is.

I enjoy getting in arguments with idiots on this site, but 90% of the responses I have gotten back in the last month have just been some form of ignoring what I say and calling me a CTR shill. Not everyone who disagrees with you is getting paid to do so.

Editing history isn't a left right thing. It's a human thing.

Remember when the Texas school board started editing the history books to reflect their conservative view of history (twice)? Remember when conservapedia started the project to remove the liberal bias from the bible? Or all the GOP pundits who claimed the Iraq war was a success last election cycle. Or the people who now argue that McCarthyism was a justified success?

CNN declares math to be racist submitted by Pwning4Ever to whatever

Perhaps you should post more than a headline because there is more to it that "numbers hate black people"

From targeted advertising and insurance to education and policing, O'Neil looks at how algorithms and big data are targeting the poor, reinforcing racism and amplifying inequality. These "WMDs," as she calls them, have three key features: They are opaque, scalable and unfair. Denied a job because of a personality test? Too bad -- the algorithm said you wouldn't be a good fit. Charged a higher rate for a loan? Well, people in your zip code tend to be riskier borrowers. Received a harsher prison sentence? Here's the thing: Your friends and family have criminal records too, so you're likely to be a repeat offender. (Spoiler: The people on the receiving end of these messages don't actually get an explanation.)

So basically, they are saying that algorithms that companies are using are really unfair and as a result of using generalized statistics, it hurts the poor and minorities more than white middle-income America. Which is totally true. Loan companies would rather have a conservative algorithm that unfairly denys people for a loan instead of paying for a loan officer who can use more discretion.

And this affects everyone, so it's not a problem that should be dismissed. If I lived in a rough neighborhood, an algorithm could see that I live somewhere near crackheads, and thus decide that I am statistically more likely to have financial troubles. This would result in me getting higher rates than if I lived somewhere nice. Thus, it would cost poor people more to borrow money, even if they are financially responsible. Someone looking at history, professionalism, and references only may come to a different conclusion about the borrower.

Stuff like this hurts social mobility. If it costs poor people more to borrow money, it means it's harder for them to leave a poor area, and it's harder to finance improvements that could make the area more prosperous.

More FTA:

"This is unjust," O'Neil writes. "Indeed, if a prosecutor attempted to tar a defendant by mentioning his brother's criminal record or the high crime rate in his neighborhood, a decent defense attorney would roar, 'Objection, Your Honor!'"

But in this case, the person is unlikely to know the mix of factors that influenced his or her sentencing -- and has absolutely no recourse to contest them.

Or consider the fact that nearly half of U.S. employers ask potential hires for their credit report, equating a good credit score with responsibility or trustworthiness.

This "creates a dangerous poverty cycle," O'Neil writes. "If you can't get a job because of your credit record, that record will likely get worse, making it even harder to work."

Londons New Mayor Warns Trump: Let In Muslims Or They Will Attack America submitted by stillinit to politics

How many muslims have attacked America? 5? 10? 20? Not that many.

How many muslims are there in America? 2,750,000

I think the point is More Muslims will attack America, because barring them will change the fight from a middle-east vs America to Islam vs America

Using their own dead son as a political prop

Question: Was the RNC parading around Patricia Smith okay?

disgusting behavior

I think Patricia Smith's was worse since she blamed Clinton directly, even though it was in contrast to the Republican funded investigation into Benghazi. So the RNC knew what she was saying was not truthful, but they still paraded her out there to call Clinton a murderer...

So just understand it's not a just a DNC thing and I would say the RNC is worse about it.

EDIT: To the 9 of who who downvoated, care to explain why the RNC parading Patrica Smith around was okay?

Trump: Obama was more angry at me than at the shooter submitted by OhBlindOne to politics

laikaislost 18 points -17 points (+1|-18) ago

Because the shooter is dead, and Trump is still loading about how 49 dead people "prove" he is right.

EDIT: Ha, downvoaters can't handle the truth. Trump is gloating and patting himself on the back, and trying to use this tragedy for political gain.
