Parkland students return from spring break to clear backpacks and TSA-style checkpoints submitted by chuck45532 to news

jammicsmith 1 points 30 points (+31|-1) ago

I'm confused. Didn't the guy show up at 2:20pm? With cases large enough to hold assault rifles? And a history that made him well known? Would it have made any difference if his cases were see through?? Was there anybody there to stop him? What the hell do they expect to accomplish with clear backpacks? Why is the response never something that would have prevented the tragedy? What the hell is wrong with these people!?!?

PSA: Don't buy or trust Western Digital with your data submitted by The_Venerable to technology

Always have redundancy, have at least 2 hard drives for backups. They're only $60ish for 2TB! or $150 for 8TB. Is your data not worth way more than this??

https://www.amazon_com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STEA2000400/dp/B00TKFEE5S

https://www.amazon_com/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG0080HBK-NESN/dp/B07D5V2ZXD

and then encrypt and mount the drive yourself. attached drive will typically be recognized as mount as /dev/sdb (or /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd, etc)

cryptsetup -y --cipher aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 --key-size 256 luksFormat /dev/sdb1

once the drive is encrypted, you can decrypt and attach at your leisure.

cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb1 my_encrypted_disk

this will decrypt the partition, you can reference it at /dev/mapper/my_encrypted_disk

If this is the first time you decrypt it, put a filesystem on it

mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/my_encrypted_disk

and make a directory where you intend to mount it

mkdir /my_encrypted_folder

Once you've got a partition and mount point, mount it. If you've already partitioned the volume, skip previous steps and just mount it.

mount /dev/mapper/my_encrypted_disk /my_encrypted_folder

  • "my_encrypted_disk" and "my_encrypted_folder" can be any string, so you could have "ED1", "ED2" mapped to "/EF1", "/home/user/EF2" if you have multiple encrypted disks.

having multiple encrypted disks is critical. I would NEVER send it back to Western Digital and ask them to decrypt. If a hard drive fails, I drill a hole in it and replace it with a new one. Data is WAY too valuable to be concerned with the $60ish to replace a 2TB portable hard drive.

Oh, and when you want to remove the drive, unmount and then decrypt:

umount /my_encrypted_folder

cryptsetup luksClose /dev/mapper/my_encrypted_drive

Then you can unplug your removable drive.

Protecting the family jewels submitted by Wonder_Boy to funny

This appears to be directing you to this page:

https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/collection/family-jewels

with this PDF

http://www.foia.cia.gov/sites/default/files/document_conversions/89801/DOC_0001451843.pdf

Which is 29.3MB and 702 pages. It appears to show some shady shit that was uncovered from Freedom of Information requests through scanned copies of very old documents.

One of the first scandals was a CIA attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro. There was another about some shady dealings paying for postage for responding to something or other. It would take an INSANE amount of time to pick through what this is actually saying, cross-reference it with other sources, and organize the information into a digestible piece (article/book/whatever).

This is what news organizations used to do. Now they just say "Trump colludes with Russia" "Hillary emails and Benghazi".

I don't have time to make any sense of this, but if anybody feels like wasting a few hours (or months), feel free to offer some analysis with references to citations from specific pages and maybe external links that would corroborate your analysis of the data. You know, if you want to be a news reporter for free...

Resorts in Jamaica are facing an enormous sexual assault problem. submitted by Artofchoke to news

is 12 rapes in a year a lot? I mean sure, all rape is bad, but there's rape everywhere. Is this higher than other places on a per capita basis? Isn't that the number we should be comparing to conclude that there's a problem?

PLEASE DON'T CENSOR AT ALL!!! (except illegal shit like kiddie porn).

Not going down this route is worth whatever is required. From my end, as an end user, I'm willing to deal with occasionally seeing something that makes me uncomfortable to keep free speech unconditional on voat!

Can we just flag the content? At whatever point a moderator would choose to delete the posts or ban the user, instead flag the post as "mod-del". If you would ban the user, auto-flag any posts by that user as "mod-del". Then allow users an option in their profiles to auto-hide any posts flagged as "mod-del".

We already have the ability to flag posts, this would require adding an option to flag users per subverse and auto flag posts per subverse based on the user flag. It would also require an additional checkbox in our user account "hide 'mod-del' flagged posts".

This doesn't censor anyone, but gives every user the choice to not see these posts. We can have our cake and eat it too! Well, except for @PuttItOut that would have to make a few code changes...
