Do you think it stupid that you can't post too many comments in different threads to close to one another? submitted by Mesha to AskVoat

No. It's inconvenient, but I'd rather have that than spammers. Also, to a point, the quantity of comments suggests an inverse correlation in quality.

It's a slippery slope though.

That's difficult to say for sure. War is bad, yes, but on the other hand, what would the world look like without a USA. Say what you will about government intrusiveness, and I'll likely agree. However, our military has allowed other countries to minimize their own defense spending, and target more important things. While I don't think the allies would've lost the wars without us, the death toll in WWI and WWII would've been much higher. There would be no North and South Korea. Just the people's republic. We were a major part of the push forward in the industrial revolution. The sheer number of people here, and the open, commercial society has managed to jumpstart several other economies, including China. I honestly and firmly believe all of this is possible only because the US is one country, instead of four or ten or fifty.

To be totally and brutally honest? Because the right side won the war. If the south won, or we lost the war to break from the UK, they would have been right. History has no good guys and bad guys. Even Hitler and Khan had a logic behind what they were doing, and people they were protecting. If they had won their wars, they would likely be celebrated in earnest.
