Household Appliances Were Cheaper 40 Years Ago: The Truth About Globalization & The Myth Of Cheap Goods submitted by Thalean to politics

Thalean 0 points 30 points (+30|-0) ago

It's all about purchasing power. People forget that until the late 1970s, you could get a job right out of high school, buy a house, and support a stay-at-home wife and 3-5 kids all on one income.

Now even with a couple that both works, raising 2 kids is barely possible in large cities.

I think that destroying our economy via offshoring & diluting the currency via quantitative easing is all an attempt to destroy the family, and therefore civilization. I you can't afford kids, most people won't have them.

Literally encountered that argument on reddit. It's like they forgot that 30 million illegals also rent & buy property.

Will Automation Make us Poor? submitted by daskapitalist to economics

Thalean 2 points -2 points (+0|-2) ago

Stop blaming robots. The reason we've lost so many jobs is because of offshoring, which strips the economy of additional output, while productivity continues to grow.

If output grew as fast as productivity, there'd be no problem.

At the Heart of Protectionism is a Fear of Prosperity submitted by daskapitalist to economics

Thalean 1 points -1 points (+0|-1) ago

Oh come on.

Britain was highly protectionist before & during the industrial revolution, where the economy grew by 10% a year for 50 years. Technology grows the economy, not free trade. Protectionism retains & encourage domestic technological growth, ergo grows the economy. Simple.

That is net, since the deficit is the net balance between exports & imports.
