Should scientific papers be anonymous? submitted by Atko to science

Rosenkavalier 1 points 49 points (+50|-1) ago

I believe the larger point is accountability. If there is no public record of a researcher's work and affiliations, undue influence from monied interests with an agenda about a product or technology would flourish. Yes, personal biases amongst reviewers is an issue, but understanding the paths of scientific "authorities" outweighs this call for anonymity. Eli Lilly, Monsanto, DuPont, Dow, would LOVE anonymous "science."

I'm all for ending career politicians and career bureaucrats, let's make it more systemic-aimed than just retaliatory.

Even though from the article it says: "Wirbel did not respond to a request for comment. He is from Colorado Springs and police there say his post is covered by free speech and they do not intend to investigate."

Also, not sure why you specifically would want speech so tightly enforced, I'm not sure you would do well in US courts lol. Just from yesterday:

What if someone says "no" to this?

If the planet would quit fighting and work together we could have millions of people living in Space or on other Celestial Bodies within a few decades.

Ohhhhhh that's what we have to do, it is so clear now. Utopian super-communism. When you have your super perfect community set up as a pocket here in current reality, people will see a positive example to emulate. Until then...empty posturing that at best is naïve and at worst leading again to a slaughter of people who say "no" to the "utopia."

Hmm..I'm not sure I disagree with you that surveillance systems set up by the NSA are here for good, but I do think that their existence and implementation on the domestic population should at least be an existential discussion.

For me, the problem comes up when looking into the future. The more advanced we become, the more points of data and quantified experiences we produce. Being successful in modern society necessitates using modern advancements, so it is difficult to have friendships and meaningful work without using advanced telecommunications. I do not feel comfortable with any entity being able to aggregate all of the points of data that I produce, and then also wield the power to imprison or kill me. While I abhor advertising, businesses do not have a monopoly on violence and cannot actively threaten my livelihood simply based on the data they collect on me (maybe that is too simplistic of a view).
