Shadowbans were the single biggest transparent redflag about Reddit.

I mean: they didn't work for their intended purpose, and trivially so. And they seemed to be used for censorship and pushing people they didn't want away, as opposed to for spam. (And again, for spam accounts they are trivial to detect anyways.)

As such, I fully agree with you.

Worse than that.

There are, quite literally, large chunks of countries that have the same IP address. & come to mind (Qutar), although there are others. (Related: an interesting Wikipedia page.)

This is very disappointing to me, to put it mildly.

I understand your need to protect the site, and applaud your transparency as to the reasons. And I will note that I disagree with all of those subs, and consider them vile. But. There's a phrase: "If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all". The reason I left Reddit was because of problems with censorship, and this is a first step on a slippery slope in that direction. If it is a problem in the country in which things are hosted, shift hosts.

As such, I am leaving. I don't know where I shall go from here - at this point I feel very much an internet nomad, but it appears as though the place to settle down is not here.

New Voat users, what are you expectations of Voat? submitted by Magnar to AskVoat

Hopefully. Currently.

Note that even as we speak the top post on /v/ideasforvoat is a request to raise the limits.

As I've said elsewhere:

Raising the limits has definite short-term gains. I am not disputing that.

But long-term, limits on users that are not popular end up killing sites. Via degradation into toxic cliques of power users. Case in point: Stack Exchange and Wikipedia.

I agree. There are many discussions that cannot really be had any other way.

All not allowing this sort of thing does is create username bloat as people create throwaway accounts all over the place.
