Merkel's time is running out

Chancellor Angela Merkel has painted herself into a corner with her handling of the refugee crises. Her irresponsible politics are leading deeper into the moral abyss. She needs to change her course, or resign.

An editorial by Tilman Gerwien

What a crash! A few weeks ago, she was the "most powerful woman in the world" (TIME magazine), before that, the undisputed Number One of the Christian-Democrat Union (Germany's conservative party), sure to win the Federal elections in 2017, her popularity numbers through the roof. And now? A chancellorship in it's dusk, end times in Berlin. Come see the public dismantling of Angela Merkel, her downfall as a politician. The woman who was said to be cool and rational painted herself into a corner on the subject of refugees. Maybe it will be left to historians of the future to figure out how this intelligent woman managed that.

A majority of Germans is against her refugee politics. And except for a few, brief exceptions they've always been. Europe is against her - the E.U. is about to collapse. Her own party has quit obeying her. Desperately, her coalition partners CSU (Christian Social Union, the Bavarian conservatives) and SPD (Social Democrats) are paddling for the shore. Merkel's time is running out.

An act that was morally right, to open German borders for refugees of the Syrian civil war, has turned into a political trauma. Even now, in the midst of winter, 3,000 refugees are crossing into Germany every day. To let a million or more people into the country, year after year? No country in the world allows that.

For good reasons. Because it is irresponsible. The drowned children swept to the shores of the Aegean Sea are Merkel's dead children. Without her grand gestures most of the migrants wouldn't have taken that route in first place. It's not like their stated goal is to reach Poland or France. If Merkel were to act on her grand statements, she would have send the German Navy to fish the refugees out of the Mediterranean to end at least those miserable deaths.

But she's also acting irresponsibly towards Germany, which after all is supposed to be her main responsibility. You'd have to be incredibly naive to believe the misogynist New Year's Eve excesses in Cologne and Hamburg weren't but a first taste of what will happen if even more young muslim men are being let into the country without any controls.

For months the chancellor has been throwing smoke bombs into the debate to distract from her failure. She says "we can do it!", but where IS her grand plan that explains just how? Integrating a million men doesn't end at housing them in gymnasiums and renting a bunch of porta-potties. And why exactly doesn't she ask the people if they even WANT to "do it"? No voting on it in parliament. No voting on it for citizens.

The task of securing Germany's borders is now falling to Turkey, which is the epitome of moral two-facedness. Erdogan, of all people, who wipes his behind with human rights, is now supposed to do the dirty work for Germany, just so the chancellor can maintain her pretty, welcoming face. As reward, German billions and a forced entry into the alleged community of values, the E.U. Which will only encourage Erdogan in his brutal war against the Kurds.

In Europe, Merkel is finished anyway. For years she ignored cries for help from EU border countries like Italy and Greece who were begging for a quota system for accepting refugees. Now that these refugees are coming to Germany, she suddenly wants one, too. For years, she preached to other countries to abide by the Maastricht Treaty when it came to stabilize the Euro. Now she suddenly calls EU agreements (which specifies that refugees coming from safe countries can be sent back) "obsolete". And her erroneous assumption that the right to asylum doesn't know an upper limit? Well, that's just her opinion, and hers alone, shared by no-one else in Europe. Even such a liberal country as Sweden went and stopped mass immigration at its borders now.

And Germany is losing itself on this national-chauvinistic ego-trip, barking instructions, this time on on humanity and migration, at others. Strangely, the past critics of German EU imperialism during the Greece crisis are silent on that. Maybe because they don't actually have a problem with German chauvinism as such, as long as it is for what they think is "a good cause".

Instead, Poland is being chastised for alleged infringements on democratic principles and put under oversight of a E.U. commission. How stupid does one have to be not to see that "putting Poland under oversight of a German commissioner" isn't exactly going to make them clap their little hands in glee? Especially since Germany NEEDS Poland's help to overcome this refugee crisis. And why France's government-controlled TV and radio aren't an infringement on democratic principles, but Poland's are, will probably remain the chancellor's little secret.

Merkel acted like a bull in the European china shop. It will take years and many German tax billions to fix this. Will she be up to that task? Only if she changes her course. She's only got a few months to do so. Maybe mere weeks. Three German states will have important elections in March. The Christian Democrats are a very UN-sentimental party when it sees its power threatened.

Merkel must end her refugee madness. Or she won't be chancellor for much longer.

damn that took me forever to bring across. I need a smoke now. OP.

That's splash resistant, not water proof. Read up on what the meter ratings really mean. You don't get real water proof until about 200 meters.
