NWhat Earth would look like orbiting a supermassive black hole. submitted by Ghost_Animator to gifs

Ghost_Animator 0 points 8 points (+8|-0) ago

Earth appears to form a ring around a 2,000 solar mass black hole due to gravitational lensing, a bizarre effect of general relativity. It also appears to orbit faster behind the black hole than in front due to tremendous relativistic effects. Though optically accurate, this picture is a bit unrealistic: Earth would be vaporized due to tidal forces in about one orbit. It would also orbit 80 times per second at this distance.
