Do humans create their own gods, particularly by looking in the mirror? submitted by EvolvedPrimate to atheism

Humans have a psychological need to find ways to control the world, particularly something outside of themselves like gods that they can propitiate. When humans achieve some degree of control themselves, they tend to promote themselves into the role of god (on earth). They see in the mirror as themselves as gods or devils and self-promote their powers, usually to the detriment of the people around them.

If you define soul not as the Judeo-Christian concept as divine spark of spirit, or the Greek concept of the animating force whether animus or Logos, or the essence retained during reincarnation, but as the central ‘selfness’ that constitutes the unique you, with all the component parts, then your essence is composed not only of the nexus of the physical universe being the matter and energy network combining into one entity as the sum total of your probabilistic Schrodinger wave equation, the genetic organization with which you are endowed, but also the informational content acquired through existence. You acquire knowledge through senses and translate the stimuli to form the belief structures which become your foundation, which can include the spiritual content believed. Witness the transformations in Mahatma (Great Soul) Gandhi and St Paul on the road to Damascus. One core element in the article is that you choose which elements of your environment to subsume into your being, from the food you eat, to the concepts in which you choose to believe, to the energy you channel into your life’s actions and the ethical beliefs you construct as your guide. Even hopes of post-continuance after your dissipation can be incorporated. Consciousness is a state induced by the operation of a highly complex brain and CNS which has acquired extraordinary feedback re-entrant capability without which divine spark would be an invisible empty energy. Forming these into your core structure is performed through you exercising critical judgment of their validity, but judgment can be notorious since by its basis is subjective. This illusion of construct validity turns to delusion when you retain the structure despite evidence to the contrary you choose to ignore. “I believe” is the last recourse to maintain an untenable hypothesis, usually followed by ‘absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.’ But I do appreciate your insights.

A more extensive exploration of this article can be found at the same site epspecularum.com in an article ‘Trials of Kali’. The mythic foundation of gods, their purpose as needed by humans, the limitation of intangible gods in a rational world, the schism of science from religion to become the dominant social guide, the new foundations based on quantum physics and in biomedical and genetic research, the future trend of humans, social implications and creation of the neo-gods.

The problem with mirrors at home is that you will see your image as you WANT to see yourself. The image in the bathroom mirror is an exquisite liar. The brain constructs the sensory image by pattern matching and builds the perceptual image you wish to see, not how others would see you. Look at optical illusions to see the brain switching interpretations. An inadvertent look at a reflection in a non-home mirror such as glass windows and store mirrors reveals you for just an instant how you would see yourself as a stranger, but then your brain reconstructs the image when it becomes aware it is you. To develop facial expressions and practice speech might be better served using a video so you will see a stranger performing, at least initially.
