We should host the Olympics in the same place every time submitted by asmodea to news

I never understood why cities want to host the Olympic games in the first place. It is almost certainly not going to be profitable, and the fame it brings is even more fleeting.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, Are GMOs Safe? submitted by Allrightsreserved to science

While this is not in his specific field, I think he has demonstrated numerous times the ability to think critically, apply appropriate skepticism, and understands the scientific method and logic. I also don't think he has any nefarious agenda on this topic. But, you are right one does have to make up their own opinion trying to avoid appealing to authority particularly if that authority is not an expert in that field.

Next thing they will be telling me is I have to have a "driver's license" and "registration" for my car. I can't be high, stoned, drunk while driving. I SO tired of the "rules" and "laws" /s

Army Ranger instructors say women didn't carry the same amount of equipment, didn't take their turn carrying heavy machine guns, were given intensive pretraining not offered to men, among other things submitted by SarMegahhikkitha to news

Do you also have no problem with paying for the extra 7 out of 10 women that wash out (compared to 1 out of 10 for men) as well as the increased medical costs (sometimes lifelong) for women attempting to meet those standards of performance? My impression has been that most would like less money spent on the military.

It costs the taxpayers money for each student in ranger training though. The more people that washout the more money and manpower that is wasted that could be better used on other things. It has also been shown that females suffer more injuries performing duties required of combat arms which also costs additional time/money/manpower to address and results in an overall less ready force. I just don't find it very cost effective making it an overall poor investment of a defense spending.
