TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) Explained submitted by Walther to politics

AllenIll 0 points 12 points (+12|-0) ago

Thanks for posting this. I read about suppression of news related to this bill on Reddit and was motivated to come here based on this. This is a transgression that I can't abide. Just as what happened with Digg with it's redesign fail and the conservative coordinated vote manipulation, Reddit appears to be succumbing to it's own success as powerful interests are getting heavily involved in using it as a public relations platform. Sorry for the digression though; thanks again for posting.

I think many people here have personally experienced some form of censorship on Reddit. What is difficult to believe is that the leadership of this company somehow thought that it would be a good idea to do this secretly (shadowbanning) and that somehow or another people wouldn't figure out what was happening on a massive scale and organize together in protest. It is a social network called a community after all.

I've speculated about this before here, but I'm really beginning to suspect that Reddit was targeted so as to disrupt any kind of potential threat it may have posed through organized action. From TPP, to large Telecom mergers, to NSA spying, to the upcoming election. You almost have to wonder if Reddit itself was doing the censorship and community manipulation. Of course it's easy to go into wild conspiracy theories, but one thing's for sure; Reddit just tore itself apart and any threat it may have posed via collective action has just been neutered.

I've always found it funny that spikes in the market or sectors of the economy are labeled bubbles. When it's pretty clear looking at the ups and downs of any chart—pyramids are a more accurate characterization. It's just a series of pyramids schemes; one right after the other.

Artist carves and paints a block of wood to look like a box of money submitted by Abe_Lincoln to art

Amazing work, with quite a message as well. I remember seeing an great collection of photos of trash carved out of wood last year and thought this might be the same artist. Nope, but I found this work to be equally intriguing as well:

This Isn’t Trash. It’s a Painting on Carved Wood.

ELI5 what is going on back at Reddit? submitted by volcano_magma to MeanwhileOnReddit

I think this is something to consider in what is going on as well:

How a Reddit rally generated huge turnout for Sanders in Madison

Campaign spending is going to run into the billions for the 2016 cycle in all likelihood so Reddit is going to be a prime target for manipulation, from all sides. Sanders is a self proclaimed Socialist, and this may be sending some sectors of power into a panic.

The Human Welfare Economy - RSA's Matthew Taylor in London (4-7-2015) 57 Min. submitted by AllenIll to lectures

Description:

The RSA presents the RSA's Chief Executive’s Lecture 2015

The 2008 crisis has subsided. The UK economy, we are told, is thriving, but from low pay to inequality to sustainability, a conventionally successful economy fails to align with long-term human flourishing.

How might asking ‘what economy do we want?’ enable us to look again at radical ideas for economic reform, and how might new forms of engagement help us think and act more boldly?
