I have been messing around with Lubuntu and Ubuntu MATE 16.04 on older machines the past few days, and they are both solid. I have no interest in Unity, but Ubuntu does a great job creating a backbone for other spins or or distros with their LTS releases. I hope Peppermint 7 and Elementary 0.4 are not far off.

I've been running Mint on my dell 1525 for some time and though I might try ubuntu, All I had was 12 on DVD and after 45 minutes finished install and I click on upgrade to 14. 50 minutes and still waiting on upgrade. Mint fresh install and update took a half hour or so.

So it looks like you've done everything you should do for the disk in windows. The next step is to put in the instalation cd. Select "try ubuntu without installing" to get a full system. Launch gparted to make the ext4 and swap. Then on the desktop click "install ubuntu" and when it comes to the disk section select "do something else" to manually assign the ext4 as / so as to not have ubuntu's auto shit fuck up your windows.

Try mint some time too. You might as well try a few before your system ages and you end up entrenched.

Ubuntu has 'Software and Sources'(type it in the search bar) that handles the most popular drivers. The last tab should be what you're looking for.

I will say the first thing I always have the most trouble with is installing drivers on a new linux distro.

In Ubuntu there is a driver manager somewhere in the settings. It's called "additional drivers". There you select the proprietary graphics driver and microcode for your CPU. Then reboot to load the graphics driver if you changed it.
