False, JHP's break apart and lose momentum rapidly when they hit a target. They do more internal damage but are far less likely to pass through-and-through.

I carry hollow point. Even with my big slow .40 S&W bullets, I worry about overpenetration using FMJ.

Anything from a 38 and up can pass through-and-through with FMJ's if they don't hit any bone in the process. JHP's are almost always the best choice for a CC weapon for this reason.

Hollow Point. Always. I don't want to shoot through the bad guy, just into him.

Hollow point their rate of expansion delivers more energy to the assailant it also reduce the chances for the bullet to exit the assailant with enough Force to kill a bystander.

I wanted to start a reasonable conversation for those who might not know.

What is the purpose of urethane filled hollow points? To make them more aerodynamic?

The tip is red and feels like a pencil eraser. It's supposed to be better for a short barrel. And guarantees a large transfer of force from a larger mushroom. Hornady makes a few types. I'm carrying the critical defense.

A normal JHP will penetrate then expand where as a rubber/urethane filled JHP will begin expanding on impact. In my opinion the filled JHP's do less damage to a perpetrator than a standard JHP because the expand on impact and thus the normal soft tissue of the outer body absorbs most of the damage and limits the amount of internal (organ) damage.

22's up to short barrel 38's should probably always use FMJ's. The muzzle velocity is so low that you would have to put the gun up to the perpetrators body when pulling the trigger to do any real damage if you used JHP's.

Very good point.....there is another major thing to consider with JHP's....look into the center of the bullet, if the Jacket is segmented like the outer casing then it will have very little penetration before separating. If it has a solid Jacket and a segmented outer casing then it will penetrate deeper before expanding.
