Thanks dude. I took a look at titanium back when I first got an android phone and there was something that I didn't like about it then but I think it's time to take a look again.
If anyone is interested I found another backup app on F-droid called 'oandbackup' that seems to do almost precisely what I described, though I haven't fully tested it yet.

Titanium Backup Pro (not free but the apk is easily obtainable) if you're rooted. Helium if you're not rooted. Both backup app data as well.
If you don't want app data and you're not rooted, apps like Super Backup and Backup Your Mobile will work.

It's worth learning titanium backup. Nothing comes close in functionality, its just overwhelming at first.
