The Zoneminder wiki page is incorrect for the 3. This link works but you must add the correct symbolic link and javascript to your Apache configuration with:

sudo ln -s /etc/zm/apache.conf /etc/apache2/sites-available/zm.conf

sudo a2enconf javascript-common

I used a wireless camera I already had. I also didn't disable X but probably will to keep overhead down.

zoneminder.com

"A full-featured, open source, state-of-the-art video surveillance software system."

"Monitor your home, office, or wherever you want. Using off the shelf hardware with any camera, you can design a system as large or as small as you need"

I use it to run the wireless security camera I have on my main entrance. You can draw zones on your camera feed and zm will only record if something moves inside that zone. For example, the zone on my front door is only the upper half of the door so a dog scratching to get out won't be recorded.

There's a ton of options on what it will or will not record. The video is stored in a MySQL database so you can use any computer, including a $35 Pi.
