Usually there's a way to pick the element and block the interfering popup IIRC. I've done it before.

or covering up the content after a few seconds with a transparent layer and a popup forcing registration. It's 2016, all browsers let me right click, inspect the dom, and delete any nodes I choose. Bam, Transparent layer, gone! Bam, forced registration form, gone! It's actually quite satisfying.

can you eli5 this for me?

i have seen mentionof disabling certain elements of a page. is this the same type of thing? Is it really as simple as finding something called "registrationpopup.whatever" and disabling it? is there a checkbox to disable it?

with those type sites ive just been putting the URL into archive.is, so thats another option too.

Most adblockers have a "block element" feature that you can use. Just select the "please login" and/or gray layer and proceed.

I'm a developer, I can edit the dom of any page pretty easily. I don't recommend doing it my way if you don't read html/js very well.

You go to a store every day and you blantenly steal merchandise from it. One day the store owner asks you to stop stealing from them.

You go "I'm not coming back again. You just lost one valuable customer."

Website owners pay money to maintain their site. They put up ads to try to earn back the money they spent. Using their website costs then money. When you block their source of income for your usage you are essentially taking away the money they spent in the site.

For a lot of sites their only source of revenue is ads..just saying. I use ad-block pretty often too but I disable it for certain sites. I feel bad about it :(

I know what you mean. Unfortunately, There's way too many sites that have malware and/or load slower that crap. These sites ruin it for everyone.

That's fine. The problem is that these companies do nothing to screen the ads on their sites.

Me too. More an exception than the rule. There are a very few sites I hand pick to view ads on, with the explicit purpose of supporting those sites. The first time they get annoying though, that site is back on the list.

Know what I wonder? Is how do they make money with those ads in the first place? I literally have not clicked on an ad in over a decade, even before there were ad blockers. Who does that? Grannies who don't know any better? I mean I know only a fraction of 1% has to actually spend money in order for the ad to be profitable but still ... hard to imagine it making enough to support whole sites.
