So you think in this case it's fine that 9 month old content is above all new content? On reddit, the way it works is that new content appears not at the top, but maybe 3-4 places down (for less active subs, like /r/denmark). So at least people would notice the content, and be able to choose whether to up/downvote it. I think this is fine. New content shouldn't appear in #1 spot, but at least toward the top. However in this specific case, I think all new concent should appear above 9 month old content.

And how many people use the new tab - ie actively clicking to change the ranking? I don't and never did. I assume the site pushes hot/relevant things to the top. That's the way it ought to work. I wouldn't want to come back after 9 months and view the same exact content as when I left. Again, of course this is not a problem for really active subs. But most subs on here are not active, not yet. And they will stay inactive if all content that a new, casual user is going to see, is really old stuff.

I agree with you, a new post with no votes should show up ahead of a 6 month old post with 3 votes. Right now, everything relies on people browsing the new queue for good content to get upvoated.
A new post should be given more weight. At least let it show up for an hour or two before it ends up behind dusty year-old posts.
I think it also depends on the subverse. Look at the front page. There is a /v/politics submission that only has 3 upvotes but is in the top 10, its also only 53 minutes old.

I brought this up the other day, just to add more comments into the mix.

The other day ;) I looked to see if others had noticed, glad I'm not the only one.
Edit: Seems a large group of people really like this system, where things don't move a lot. You see the same stuff on the front page, all the time. Would never have imagined that to be the case, honestly. Or maybe it's just a case of people liking status quo, whatever it is.

I certainly believe so. I had to put up a sticky on /v/Vaping so people would sort by "New" to see the content that was coming up.
So, here's a thought. Right now it looks like reddit, so people are applying reddit like standards. hot/new/top type things.
There's a chance here for a better way. I'm not entirely sure what that better way might be, but its where we should be guiding our discussion right?
Here's an example. Facebook went to some kind of algorithm to show things it thinks your want. Nearly every person I know sets it back to chronological order.
Now, that may be harder to deal with as the noise level in /v/all or increases. I have an idea there.
Sort all or the defaults with an algorithm. But sort your own Front of subscription subverses defaulting to New.
I agree we need to find the best way. I don't think the current way is the best way. New users, will get the impression that things are stagnant here, simply because new posts are way down the list. Some of these users might think it's due to insufficient user base, and leave the site for good. I think things as they are now, makes it harder for voat to compete.
Economists will say it's all about incentives. So, how do you incentivise new content? A third kind of scoring for a user? Perhaps based on number of submissions and comments (ignoring upvoats), minus downvoats? If that number is positive, give their new submissions the same algorithmic weight as something with one voat.

Here is an archive so people can see what you are talking about.
I also think this probably not the best behavior. The cause seems to be that "Hot" sort algorithm seems to weigh priority as (upvotes-1 * newness) and if no one else has upvoted your post, the "newness" benefit doesn't kick in.
This is not be a problem in a large subreddit with people browsing the new queue, but for smaller subreddits getting off the ground it is. So I hope it is changed.

You are exactly right. Because the other post I made, that has one upvote, is at the top. So one vote made the difference from being in 14th place to 1st place. But it's only luck that someone noticed that post all the way at the bottom.
