Given that we can't even get a regular MMO that doesn't suck I don't hold much hope for a VR MMO that doesn't suck.
Beyond which, MMOs rely on large numbers of people playing to give them a sense of having a world - VR adoption by gamers has so far been terrible due to cost driving the barrier to entry up.
You can hardly blame them for that. They were first on the scene with their own API. If you want to blame anyone for fragmentation of the VR market, blame HTC/Valve.

don't forget about oculus wanting it's own platform helping to split the already smallish market.
