Well, the soil probably contains a lot of iron, so when it is oxidized by the oxygen in the air the chemical change produces the red tint. Essentially, what you're seeing is rusty soil. What's even more mind boggling is just how much oxygen has been absorbed into the soil all over the world, mostly during "The Great Oxygenation Event" millions of years ago. All the oxygen in the atmosphere right now is a drop in a very large bucket of how much oxygen is bound to rocks and soil.
