Welcome to the panopticon:

The concept of the design is to allow all (pan-) inmates of an institution to be observed (-opticon) by a single watchman without the inmates being able to tell whether or not they are being watched. Although it is physically impossible for the single watchman to observe all cells at once, the fact that the inmates cannot know when they are being watched means that all inmates must act as though they are watched at all times, effectively controlling their own behaviour constantly.

While it isn't controversial to anyone with a brain, there are many many people that believe the government lies

Yet the American government has convinced its population that there's "terrorists" everywhere, so these laws are needed. Even voat users are convinced they'll be raped by a Muslim unless Donald Trump stops them coming into the country

See: 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, the animes Psycho-Pass 1 and 2, etc etc etc.

If the people had any sense at this point we would have already stopped Govt from using invasive surveillance.

Almost seems too late. Only one presidential candidate, at least of Democrats and Republicans, advocates for reigning in domestic surveillance. Honestly it seems just a matter of time before the rich have the privilege of shutting off their telescreens for a few hours everyday.

And before now there were exactly 0 candidates in favor of reigning in domestic surveillance.

I think it's easy to get frustrated when you look at things only from your perspective. Imagine for a second you're a part of establishment politics. You want to maintain the US economic might through reliance on the petro dollar and using our military to support such. You want to reign in any sort of organized protest against the government through domestic surveillance and pitting the people against each other on petty matters while ignoring most of what matters. You want to globalize America's economy and force American workers to be forced to compete against Indian workers happy to perform technical tasks for $3/hour.

And now let's look at what's actually happening:

  • Renewable energy is going to spell the doom of the petro dollar
  • A 74 year old self described democratic socialist is looking as though he may take the nomination away from a woman with the most valuable last name in democratic politics.
  • A reality TV businessman who's views have been mostly focused on anti-establishment and in favor of a greater America and greater American is now leading the republicans by a wide margin. A man with one of the most valuable last names in republican politics has already had to withdraw.
  • Snowden let the cat out of the bag on domestic surveillance and claims that We need to do this and have access to this cause 'errorism! are no longer being simply accepted without scrutiny. The normally stoic Obama responded with clear frustration that people did not want the government to have an all-access key to their electronic devices.

That's just in the past couple of years. Do you think things are going to get more or less favorable for establishment politics in the years to come? Let's imagine Hillary wins this year. After 8 years of her selling off our country and policy to the highest bidder, how do you think people are going to be acting in 2020? 2024? And that's just 8 years. How about 16, 24, 40 years down the line? The petro-dollar? HAH! Tesla was overwhelmed with pre-orders for an electric vehicle coming out in 2 years and the prices will only drop at the same time performance continues to skyrocket. And an increasing number of people are already generating enough home electricity off renewables that they're independently selling surplus back to the grid.

Yeah, you think things look bad for us? Look at the world through the eyes of the establishment.

Only apparent to those who pay attention. I would say the people not paying attention are the majority.

They did a public poll a few months back and nobody knew who Snowden was, and most of the people who knew said he's a traitor.

Too bad 'muricans still are pursuing this course of totalitarianism.
