As mentioned, the purple axe stuff works pretty well. I guess it's pretty popular too -- the Walmart near me was always out -- so I use the old spice pomade because I like their deodorant. It works well for everyday use but my hair is so curly, wavy, and coarse it's tough to get it to slick. For the business side part type look, I would recommend Layrite original hair pomade. Really heavy stuff, ridiculous hold, be careful not to put too much in even damp hair or it WILL get hard like a brick. My barber uses it. Unless your hair is thin and straight, it's going to be hard to get the slicked back look though.

Empire light hold matte works for me. My hair is starting to thin out and a little goes a long way.

Check out this pomade review. I think you'll enjoy it.
Personally, I use S-Curl 360. Cheap and effective.

I use Tigi bed head B, I use two different techniques to apply it:
1 - I apply product to the damp hair and then blow dry it with cold air while shaping it, after the hair is dry I finish shaping it and then use the hottest setting on the blow drier on crucial spots for better hold
2 - blow dry the hair against the direction my hair grow (for better volume) and then shape it with product
