This article is really poorly researched. Here is the few things that I have learned over the years living, working and driving in NYC. Only thing I can't comment on is "broken taxi meter" I have never been inside of the "cop cab" and I'm sure that even if one does get a "ride" form that particular cab last thing they will worry about is whether or not taxi meter is working, simply because they are most likely under arrest! Also I must ask how does one figure out if meter is working or not if they are located outside of the car it self?

I have seen "cop cabs" with regular TLC plates. Also acrylic partition between passengers and driver is not mandatory in Yellow Cabs. Yes, it is true that majority of Yellow Cabs have it, but that is only because those are company vehicles. Some medallion owners ( owners operators ) chose not to have them installed. TCL rules state that if driver has recording device in the vehicle he or she is not required to install patrician. Additionally all vehicles equipped with recording device must have clearly visible sign in and outside the vehicle stating that passengers will be recorded for the duration of the trip.

In my opinion easiest way to spot "cop cab" is if passenger is sitting on front passenger seat ( I saw them ride around like that, not all the time but they do it often ), vehicle does not have a mandatory photo/video recording notice sticker or, and this is most obvious part ( clearly visible even at night because surface is reflective ) "hidden" emergency lights in the grill of the car, or at on the rear panel behind the back seat head rest.

I will also make another statement about the driver it self that might make me sound racist, but nevertheless it is true. If driver of the Yellow Cab is white and his accent is perfect than chances are you are dealing with a cop. I live in NYC area for 15 years and I can honestly say that I don't remember ever seeing White American driving a Yellow Cab.

Source: I worked in limousine industry for about 10 years and my parking garage was located less than a block away form Manhattan police station that has several " cop cabs " parked in front of it daily.

Your comment is more informative than the entire article. Thanks.

Thanks! Actually after looking at the images in the article again I realized that most obvious way to recognize "cop cab" would be to look at the medallion number sign on top of the roof. Each and every Yellow cab in NYC must have Off Duty written on both sides of sign on the roof of the vehicle. None of the vehicles in the article above have Off Duty sign on the roof ...

They're the only cabs that will pick up a brother?
