I vote for the candidate that I feel would do the best job, not for a winner. I'm less concerned about being on the team that can say "HA! WE WIN AND SHOWED YOU WHO IS BOSS" , because I don't care about teams.
So I don't really have to deal with that feeling of having wasted my vote. Your statement in the title only applies to those who feel that not voting for someone is the same thing as voting for someone else. Which isn't actually true. I would rather feel I made the right decision, then feel I helped someone I don't agree with win just to keep someone else I don't agree with from winning.
