I do want to say, though, that Cornwell is one of the best Authors out there of historical fiction. I am a HUGE fan of stories about English archers in the 100 years war. His Grail series was damn fine.

The Whyte series sets the story line as occurring when the Romans pulled out of Britain in around 400 AD, and those that stayed behind. This one is told from the point of view of a roman soldier that stayed behind. It starts 2 generations before Arthur is born.

Also, if you have an interest, Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth is an amazing piece of historical fiction set in England in 1100, I believe about the building of a Cathedral.
