Mine was my Uncle Alex. I was the oldest of six and as one brother or sister after another came along, I kind of got lost in the mix, an afterthought who couldn't do anything right. He was an uncle by marriage and came along when I was in my tween years, and took me under his wing. A cross between a philosopher, adventurer, swashbuckler, and bum, Alex taught me I could be someone ... that anything was possible. My parents hated him because he didn't fit the mold of day, but he was my hero. He was the guy that taught me things and took me along on his often half-cocked adventures, and I was important. Anyway, Alex died in an accident when I was maybe twenty ... but I owe who I am to the things he instilled in me. In a way, I guess that's fine, because I will never know him as an older man ... but in my mind, he will always be that fun loving swashbuckling guy who defied the norm.
