This makes total sense.

For the first part of my life, people told me I was smart, so I believed it. I didn't have to work for it, so I must just be a super genius who knows everything, right?

As I got older, I realized that being meaningfully, usefully smart is a lot of hard work. It means learning concepts, and facts, and ways of thinking.
