Freenas is a great place to start. You can set up basic shares and host them on your network. If you are more confident, you can start making jails and using those jails to host various services.
I have a freenas server that hosts plex, mumble, pydio, and dnsmasq

A "server" really doesn't have to be specialized. What really makes a decent system to host on is enough bandwidth and a static IP. Now if you have a big website with lots of visitors, you would need specialized hardware, but for a small site, even a 486 or a RaspberryPI connected to ethernet is more than enough to serve a few visitors at a time

you also mean fee bandwidth too? What speed is the Up/Down and how fast is the server can determine what you can do with it. Also what hobbies you have could also come into play.
