There are several reasons: failed diets reinforce the idea that their obesity is genetic; they want to have their efforts validated; they might even believe that one diet will finally work.

But the truth is that they don't want to eat less. Or, in my mother's case, she doesn't want to drink any less. In fact, in the week prior to her first lipo, she pigged out so much she gained 5kg (11lbs) in just EIGHT DAYS and the surgeon had to reduce the amount of fat to be removed (subtle weight gain increases significantly the risk of the surgery). She ended up measly 2kg (4.5lbs) less fat, when she could have lost 10kg (22lbs) easily.

Of course, she's already got all the weight back and then some.
