... Katy Perry is what I listen to when grocery shopping.

I find it is perfect acceptable to sing along to stupid songs at the grocery store. If other customers see you, they probably won't think you are crazy, they just think you are singing to yourself, not realizing that there is music playing in the store. But the employees know what you are doing, and they totally empathize with your pain.

The Muzak in grocery stores is nothing compared to what I had to endure working at a BBQ restaurant a few years ago. The owner had it turned to 50's music.. in the god damn kitchen. After two months of that shit blasting in my ears, I finally got a ladder and physically disabled the kitchen speaker.

The drunks and middle school dropouts I worked with at a Pizza Hut many, many years ago would have rap music blaring on this little tinny sounding piece of junk radio. Customers would complain to the management about it, and they'd just crank it back up. I stole the cord one day, and they just brought in another one. I stole that one, and only told the store manager where it was so she could listen in the mornings. The fuckers brought in another radio. I finally just stabbed the damned thing several times and left the knife in it to get the point across.

An unwanted intrusion through any hole including the ear is rape.

Stabbing is a perfectly valid means of self defense.

Steakhouse.

Doowhop and Mo-Town all day.

Do you have a song you keep in your head to fight it?

Before I killed the speaker, I'd listen to metal and industrial music at extreme volume levels in the 15 minutes leading up to my shift. Marilyn Manson and Fear Factory helped me fight the hourly airing of that Mello-Yello song.

I hate it so much. I have problems zoning things out, so I can't even "just ignore it" like my wife says. It's like they found the most washed up musicians they could, who were in the most dire financial straits, and offered them a sandwich for the rights to their one hit from 1997. I hated Sixpence None the Richer back then, and nothing has changed in 20 years, but I still hear that crap in damn near any store I walk into. Home Depot and Lowe's even! Why am I hearing washed up 90's girl pop in HOME FUCKING DEPOT? Shouldn't I be hearing the soothing sounds of construction work and those forklifts they zip around on?

I am totally with you on not being able to ignore background music.

And thanks for making me aware of the horribleness of Sixpence None the Richer. I always assumed those songs were by the Cranberries.

But I'm in so deep. You know I'm such a fool for you. / You got me wrapped around your finger, ah, ha, ha. / Do you have to let it linger? / Do you have to, do you have to, / Do you have to let it linger?

I hate that shit too. Any retail job I've ever had. The same songs in almost the same order. They do that shit to numb your brain and be an obedient little robot.

But what tune do you keep in your head to fight it. Or to get right afterwards?

Well I guess its the boss theme of any video game I was playing at the time. Castlevania, Final Fantasy. Stuff like that.

I find it enjoyable.

I'm usually on /mu/ listening to whatever the latest meme is, so it's refreshing to sing along to T. Swizzy or whatever. Bonus points if the person I'm with gets uncomfortable.

I guess I get it.

Or would have once long ago back when I'd torment my roommates who'd bum rides to work by singing annoying jingles or the lyrics to golden girls before I dropped em off.

I sing along loudly if I know the words
