Here is an explanation directly from the campaign as to why he voted for it. TL;DR it had the Violence Against Women Act, and he repeatedly spoke against mass incarceration and death penalty provisions.

He was schlonged by Hillary.

Then-First Lady Hillary Clinton spoke strongly in favor of increased incarceration

Voting for VAWA doesn't make his case any better.

I like how Bernie supporters like to bring up he's been on the side of the people for years in marches for gay people, black people, people that hate cottage cheese for some reason and everyone else on the god damn universe, but he's as two-faced as fucking Harvey Dent.

It's only black crime he doesn't want to be tough on.

Trump copying Bernie's correct stance on the War on Drugs. End it.

I used to think it was a flaw in our system as well, and think some of it needs to be amended(marijuana). But the locking up druggy degenerates is not a bad thing for our country, especially when most of them usually have an entire rap-sheet of other violations that actually make them get in trouble.

What about instead of spending money locking people up, we focus on education and rehabilitation.

Portugal has been thriving after decriminalizing all drugs.
