Yes but they have massive resources to call on, Russia wasn't the largest military power at the start of ww1 but it was feared due to its potential.

A country spanning 12 timezones with its own resources and a large population can't be taken lightly.

Wait a second. Are you seriously posting this? The Russian military has seemed pretty potent these last couple months. The SU-35 s are really phenomenal pieces of machinery. I read the article and the author is a European Council on Foreign Relations shill. I'd be willing to believe that they were impotent if I hadn't seen such contrary results. They are CRUSHING all opposition in Syria. They have advanced EM jamming capabilities and a TON of conventional armaments. They have never spent anything close to what USSA spends on military, but their costs are much more manageable. They churn out a SU-35 for around $40 million whereas we've spent $1.5 trillion on the F35 fighter and its still not working right. They may spend less but they certainly get a LOT more value for money.

Or CIA and Mossad trained and led insurgents. Where are you getting the idea that the rebels or ISIS aren't extremely well armed? The Russian military is no joke.
