I don't think video games are making gamers heroes or criminals. It's basically just interactive TV.

Growing up kicking ass on Halo 3 I always imagined sacrificing myself for humanities sake, and that there wasn't a greater way to die than to do so yourself. I believe those days of campaigning with my little brother on our Xbox 360 has transitioned into making me a better person over-all.

"Don't take credit for someone's success unless you're also willing to accept responsibility for their failures." If games create heroes, they also create villains.
Or, to put it more pragmatically, if games have the potential to influence people to do heroic things, they also have the potential to influence them to do horrific things. You can't have one without the other.
