The study isn't saying that autistic children only come from obese or diabetic mothers. It's saying that women with these conditions are more likely to give birth to autistic children.

400% more likely, in fact. Consider that we know that using tobacco is a really bad health choice, and tobacoo generally increases the baseline risk of cancer by 200% (more or less and depending on cancer type), and you see yet another reason why obesity costs us more every year than tobacco now.

The autism rate is 14.7 per 1000. Per the article, it's 4x that for children of obese and diabetic parents. The article doesn't claim it's the sole cause, just that it appears to be one causative factor.
