The first real kickstarted project ... And still not really moving ...
They should have built what they promised first before moving to a next gen idea ...

How about just avoiding social media?

There are certain people who don't want to, and are willing to take those risks. They're better off using this than ending up in the same boat multiple times.

This is more a webpage aggregation site. I'm not here to make friends, post about my daily life, or show you guys my cat.I don't post things about myself, just things from the internet that seem interesting. Maybe ask the occasional question.

This is going to have to get way more user friendly/streamlined before people really start jumping ship, I hope they're working on that aspect.

For the average person the front page should be much more concise and clean with a video front and center to briefly explain what diaspora is. Also the part about choosing a pod will probably confuse them, so I think it would be best to allow them to use a recommended pod during sign up, but also allow those who want to choose their own to do so during sign up.

Is information only shared on a local pod, or are the pods simply local hubs that update and talk to each other?

I'm pretty sure all of the pods interact with one another. The concept of pods is primarily to help you choose where you want your information stored.
