Yep. There was another study that they did with rats where eating food would shock a rat in another cage that the first rat could see. Once the rats realized it caused harm to another rat they stopped going back for the food.
They were actually running frighteningly elegant and subtle experiments on the researchers, to see if they felt empathy for the voles whom they were electrically shocking.

as somebody who has cared for hamsters and mice, and researched the Capabara, yes, yes they can. Like any other animal.
