I have a wild suggestion. Why not talk about science in v/science.

The top 10 posts in /v/science right now are links. That's something I want to avoid. There's no real discussion about hypothesis from what I saw. I'd like to see some real brainstorming taking place where no thought it too crazy or stupid. The free flowing of ideas for the betterment of everyone.

Why not just make a post? What's with all the drama?

The problem with /v/science is that it's not moderated to keep out the pseudoscience, advertising, and POV pushing. Since the recent events that led to the departure of the moderation team I've noticed several cases of pseudoscience making the "Hot" page, or sitting on the "New" pages for some time, with the result that I don't find it possible to treat /v/science seriously any more.

Regrettably, you've already got a problem with /v/talkscience, in that its very first thread is nonsense, and appears to be written by a crank, or at least someone with no actual understanding of what science is and how it works. You'll need to put in place some sort of process to exclude this sort of nonsense if you're actually to make any progress.

EDIT: ... Aaand thirty seconds later I realise that the creator of the thread mentioned above is also the creator and only moderator of /v/talkscience ... Oh dear...

You don't think brainstorming is a good way to advance science?

As far as i understand it all starts with hypothesis and and get refined from there. You don't think Einstein or Hawking ever discussed their ideas with other scientists? That's all this sub attempts to be. A place where people can talk science no matter what the skill level or IQ. Science is for everyone.

Science is not for everyone. On balance, I think science is for people with the temperament to be scientific. This is not necessarily about intelligence, but science does require a certain degree of intellectual honesty and personal integrity. A scientist has to be capable of openly admitting when he was wrong: he has to own his mistakes. For this reason, I think that not everyone can think scientifically: not everyone has the necessary integrity.

For example, in the thread I mentioned above your initial submission contained several obviously cranky ideas based around spirals and Fibonacci numbers. You have now edited this submission so that although it is still fairly clearly wrong it is no longer as glaringly crackpot as it was. This is intellectually dishonest, because you have not been honest about your mistakes. You have also made it impossible for my comments here, and those of other people in the thread in your subverse, to be read coherently, as our remarks refer to something that no longer exists: it's impossible for other people to follow the various chains of reasoning.

For this reason, I think you personally are not at present suited to moderating any kind of subverse that purports to follow the scientific method: it is not that you are ill-educated, but that you are intellectually dishonest.

If you really want to learn how science works and how you can do it, the best thing you could do would be to go back to school. Once you have learnt enough and mastered your own character you might be suited for running a science-related conversation.
