A mile is a trivial distance to walk. What you probably aren't realizing about the USA is that the place is so huge and sparsely populated, that a mile in any direction isn't likely to get you anywhere important in about 95% of the country.

Since a mile is longer than a kilometer, it's easier to misjudge how far a mile is. Most people would probably be surprised to know they already walk several miles a day.

It's not a "long way to walk," but if I have a car and I'm not in a major city where traffic is insane, it's much more convenient to just drive.
