It's not a "long way to walk," but if I have a car and I'm not in a major city where traffic is insane, it's much more convenient to just drive.

A mile is a trivial distance to walk. What you probably aren't realizing about the USA is that the place is so huge and sparsely populated, that a mile in any direction isn't likely to get you anywhere important in about 95% of the country.

Depends on the context. A mile of walking in the mall, is a fun day. A mile walking to the store, is a huge waste of time.

Since a mile is longer than a kilometer, it's easier to misjudge how far a mile is. Most people would probably be surprised to know they already walk several miles a day.

Meh, a mile isn't that far. Does depend on terrain though. Walking a mile up a slight hill is very tiring for someone compared to walking a mile across level streets.
