humans are naturally tribal. for over a hundred thousand years we wandered as tribal nomads. if you want to see the natural human state you have to find the tribes in the amazons or in austrailia. the family is not the nucleus, rather it is the tribe. the first settlements were settled by entire tribes, the first towns were larger tribes, eventually cities grew so big as to support multiple tribes. you have your own tribe as well, and are naturally inclined to seek out allies that share your own views.

eh, what exactly is a family, and thank god there can be things besides just the nucleus. otherwise, that shit would be boring.

Families are important, but it is equally important to be social outside of the family/clan/tribe/community/culture. These structures can be insular and can stagnate unless people expose themselves to new ideas and experiences.
