Sounds like stories of moral standing that were meant to teach people to not be greedy. The Native Americans also described huge dogs that stood 8 feet tall that white men rode...horses. They also exaggerated things that have been passed down via oral tradition through generations.

Back in Roman times they had huge dogs they would take into war. If they were to stand on their back legs they might be able to stand 6 or 7 feet.
I think some of the stories that were passed down could have been exaggerated but I also believe there is a lot of truth to the stories too. As in any language, describing something is limited by the size of the vocabulary. So they might say something like a great fireball came from the heavens. We would know it as a comet or meteorite. I also think about the game where the first person in a line is told to remember a short phrase that is whispered to them and they are suppose to tell the next person in the line what was said to them. And by the end of the line the story had completely changed. So it's likely that could have happen.
Giants have been a common story in Native American lore. I personally don't think it is too far fetched that giants existed. The tallest man alive is 8 ft 3 in tall. This website has some information about giants throughout human history.

It is actually proven that Scandinavians had settlements in North America in 800 AD in Newfoundland and other places down the east coast. Further, the DNA of many tribes even as far away as British Columbia have ancient European gene markers which date to 1000 BC showing that Europeans have been in North America for thousands of years. Columbus used ancient maps to get to the New World. Mesoamerican religions also tell of Blond blue eyed men from the sea. The evidence isn't even controversial.
What is a giant anyway but just a tall man. I hung around many Scandinavians and I at 6ft feel like a dwarf around them. All my Swedish friends are 6' 4" and above. Imagine how First Nation tribes feel around them with their average height just over 5ft.
There is some evidence to suggest (which is controversial) that Europeans were the first North Americans who came before or during the Siberian migration from Asian. There are skeletons which were discovered which are at least 9000 years old. Obviously, finding this has political and social implications, so the theory is that it may be suppressed information by academia.

I think of the tall whites when I read this story. However, here in Kentucky there has been several reliable news reports about giant skeletons being found. Some were found in caves and some were washed out during high floods. Here are a few link about some of the stories.
