Schools have been preyed upon by marketers and salesmen for decades now.
If you're in the education field you'll notice there's a cycle: the "radical new teaching method" is the same as what they sold 7-10 years ago, they're just putting it on new paper.
Common Core has problems, but it's certainly not the first time this has happened and will be far from the last.

Salesperson says "I hate kids...I'm in it to sell books."
Hi. I was in the top 10% of my high school class, and when I took the ACT it was like it was in a mysterious language. There were multiple correct answers, phrasing was confusing, and not at all like the phrasing used in the classroom, and this apparently is continuing. I had to keep in mind to pick the answer they wanted rather than the answer that was right, and I got the top ACT score in my class.
The people that make up these questions are really not acquainted with reality at all, it's a disturbing situation. That's one reason why standardized test publishers are redoing all the ACT and SAT test questions. The questions currently have nothing to do with the real world at all.
Look at some of the pics in the article. Look at the grid/array of numbers. Both arrays have the same count and get the same result, but one array is wrong. How can one result be wrong when it has the exact same count as the other one?
Give a 9th grade Common Core test to these administrators, I bet they won't pass.

Downvoats, really? This guy speaks the truth; even my economics professor blatantly, flat out admitted it. He was cool, though, and used current Canadian copyright law to let us get a booklet he self published that had all the information we needed for ~20% of what it would cost, otherwise.
Good guy; this was almost a decade ago.

It's always been about selling books to these publishers. They're just using common core a s a reason to push them harder. Nothing new happening here that wasn't before.

No shit, Sherlock. There is nothing different about basic math than there was 10...20...100...etc. years ago. I wonder if a lot of districts were getting wise to the new editions being pumped out every year so the powers that be were lobbied into requiring this bullshit.
My future kids are going to have a leg up on these poor souls who don't have parents who know better. Add to it my insistence on teaching them personal finance and they will hopefully have a bright future ahead of them. Help give your kids the help they need, don't let them get frustrated into giving up. Encourage it from a young age and help spur it on through adolescence.
I was taught to memorize some times tables but my dad told me it was a waste with 9s (0-10) as they are so easy to solve 0, 1, and 10 are simple of themselves. for the others they are all 2 digit answers the fist digit is the number -1 the second is 10- the number: take 7, 7-1=6, 10-7=3, result is 63. those two things replace memorizing 8. awkward at first and completely confuses most teachers if you show you work but very effective when you get the hang of it.

Hold out your hands, like you're trying to stop a rapist in Cologne. 9x7? Fold down the second finger on your right hand. Number of fingers on left side of folded finger = left digit. Number of fingers on right side = second digit.
This works for all of them.

That's clever. I never had a problem memorizing multiplication. I think we did it in 3rd grade and had to go to 10. I made it up to 15 or 16 because I was the only one done before I decided to just stop. For 9s I just remembered that there is a reverse of that number later on:
9x1 = 09; 9x10 = 90 9x2 = 18; 9x9 = 81 9x3 = 27; 9x8= 72 9x4 = 36; 9x7 = 63 9x5 = 45; 9x6 = 54
Sometimes it really is about finding a pattern.

High School has taught me how to bullshit. How to bullshit tests and papers, how to bullshit teachers into thinking I like them, how to bullshit my peers into thinking I like them and want there cooperation so I can take advantage of there hard work, etc. That's it. The learning stopped around 6 or seventh grade.
[–] demi_god_dylan ago
Exactly, it's not about education its about preparation, preparation for a lifetime of cooperate ass kissing and slacking off, at least that's what it seems to be.

B.S in Mathematics here. Common Core, to Math is like Astrology to Astronomy. And just like the gypsies that practiced astrology in the 1930's and 1940's in Germany, Common Core teachers should also be rounded up and gassed.

Are you sure you're in the right field? The stuff I've seen bitched about in the common core math section is stuff I figured out how to do in elementary school without ever being taught it. It's basically just rearranging a problem in your head to make it simpler to parse. I could understand if you were upset about the bullshit feminist brainwashing in common core, but this? If it's really like astronomy to you then you might want to look into pursuing a different field...

Teachers used to teach the mathematical concepts, and clarified them with examples and small algorithms you could do in your head.
Under common core, teachers teach the examples, and assume that students understand the underlying concept.
This is why common core math is bad. It promotes reciting instead of understanding. It's also why common core maths can promote brainwashing, despite being maths: it discourages thinking.

Commoncore math is impractical. Especially since in the real world, all math is done using computers.
[–] rumathlete_1 2 points 4 points 6 points (+6|-2) ago (edited ago)
there is a video of teachers using common core that show -4=16 since common core allowed them to come up with both answers. they are satan.
[–] sp00kygh0st 1 point 6 points 7 points (+7|-1) ago
I have a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and I can confirm that common core math is retarded. This should come as no surprise though because common core was created to fight "white privilege" by making it difficult for parents to help their kids on their homework.

I've seen and imagined a lot of disturbing things in my time, and the image that appeared in my head upon reading your user name is now one of them.
