It isn't meant to be practical, it's meant to get kids to think. Any idiot can follow an algorithm, and that's what we have been teaching for so long, just do the steps. Real world problems don't follow a formula.

But it doesn't get anybody to think in numerical, mathematical or algebraic terms, and how numbers reflect the real world and vice versa. It teaches kids how to solve puzzles that have nothing to do with math!

The proper fucking way to teach math is "here's two things. One thing and another thing makes two things. Now there's one and one and one things. That's three times one. Let's kick this up a notch: here's two and two and two things. I even arranged them for you in a grid of two times three. Got that idea? Cool, here's a booklet with the multiplication tables from 1 times 1 through 12 times 12. I want you little shits to memorize them forwards and backwards."

And then you'll build up from there. Instead, common core abandons, nay punishes independent thought, teaches how to solve coded riddles and how to test on those.

So we should give them calculators? I'm not seeing where you're going with this. I still use what I taught myself way back then, and it has served me very well every time I need to do basic math in my head. So how exactly is it impractical?

10 x 10 = 100 In common core they teach it in a way that you break it down 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 etc....

It's silly.

So it's silly to break math problems down in order to teach kids the concepts behind why 10 x 10 = 100, or why 9 x 5 = 45. Should we just have them memorizes those times tables instead to prevent them from ever having to understand why 8 x 6 = 48? I think I'm beginning to understand why so many people are against this math course. I forces them to think.
