^ This should work. Grub does everything by UUID these days, so it won't matter where you move that drive, as long as the boot loader goes on it somewhere. Ultimately, you'll want to get into the BIOS, which means disconnecting or replacing the screen, unfortunately, but this should at least get you going.

I think VGA sends out the signal sooner. Most BIOS have del or F2 for going into the bios, there's also F10, F1, and Escape. You could spam those keys, get into setup, see if HDMI just takes a while to turn on or if it's on until after boot.

Edit: You might be able to install, leave the install usb/dvd in and boot the hard drive from the install media. There's also installing to a USB key (Arch linux)

If you are willing to turn a few screws you could disconnect the laptop screen. Then it won't sense it and should go to HDMI as first monitor

Doesn't always work unfortunately. I've had to scrap two laptops because this exact fault.

I have zero hardware experience so I'll use this as a last option, thanks.

This worked for me when I had exactly the same issue with a notepad. Pulled my hair out blindly trying trying to guess where the menu options were after finding pics online of the bios.

Its really fairly easy and I never considered myself a hardware guy. Since the screen is broken anyway you've really got nothing to worry about. If you don't feel comfortable opening it up there's probably videos for your laptop, but you're really not likely to break anything except maybe the plastic casing.
