The DRM chip is the larger solid plastic piece at the USB end, everything after that is just analog guitar cable, removing it and splicing in a higher quality cable shouldn't affect the DRM at all.
If your game will start with your busted cables (i.e. if it detects it's plugged in) then it will continue working if you modify it this way.
