Sure, it wasn't the doctors' decision, but the family trusted the doctors' diagnostic. Which turned out to be wrong.

Recovery from actual brain death has NEVER happened.

That's almost a tautology. By definition - recovery from actual brain death never happens. By definition, if there was a recovery - then the "brain death" diagnosis was wrong. The relevant question is:

How likely is it for a person diagnosed as being brain dead to make a recovery. That's the only relevant question as far as family is concerned.

He was waiving the gun around like a madman. That said, who wouldn't give 10 months of their life so their son can have 50 more years of life? Also, I'd bet there are probably some mandatory minimum sentencing for gun-related assaults, regardless of the circumstances.
