What I read was that they go back to the 50's and 60's and the 2004 was a remake of that. Although I am looking, all I can find are vintage elf on the shelf for sale and blog posts about people who have the old ones from the 50's and 60's. I'll keep looking though.

Had one yesterday while watching the news: apparently there's a Spanish enclave in Morocco, which is called Ceuta: it's part of the EU, apparently first settled in the 5th century autonomous since 1995 and no-one in my family had any idea it existed. Never heard of it, never seen it, never visited it. Apparently it's always been there.
Most probable explanation is that we have always been oblivious of its existence but damn, I felt positively mandela'd. :)

I can no longer find a version of Let it snow that matches the version I remember... http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/frank_sinatra/let_it_snow_let_it_snow_let_it_snow.html they are all different in slight ways...

I was sure it went back from the 50's and 60's. I'll have to research it again. What I remember is that the 2004 book is just a remake of the tradition.
I hear SO many people say that they thought is was the 24th also.
