He mailed letters to 1,118 individuals, and received only 103 applications for the program.

People turning down free housing because they would have to go to school or work. Tell me again how the majority of the homeless want to get jobs.

The problem is that it isn't free, there is definitely some money to pay somewhere.

I read it as:

"If they're taking taxpayer money then they should have to contribute or train to contribute as a participating member of society."

I agree. It should be temporary housing.

The "lifers" are taking temporary housing from families that really need it. It's pretty selfish to take one of these places with no intentions of every leaving.

This isn't government trying to "nudge" people in any kind of social direction. They're saying if you're young and able bodied get a job, like everyone else has to. They aren't applying some weird condition to anything; public housing isn't meant to be a permanent free home for people who don't want to work. I'm kind of amazed this wasn't a requirement before, though not knowing their laws on such things I don't know exactly how dramatically this varies from what was in place. Perform a function in society, stay with society. Refuse? Good luck with the wolves, friend.

If you rely on someone for support then you are giving them the power to make that support conditional on you doing what they want you to do. This is no different if the supporter is an individual or the government. But only the government can use a gun to force you.

When people mooch off taxpayers because they don't want to work to support themselves and the government is the bad guy for telling them to get jobs.

Telling the poor how to live? Got that backwards pal. The message is: no freeloaders allowed. We're tired of supporting your lazy ass.

Rich people face the same dilemma, except they don't have the option of going to school because they would still need to pay their mortgage or rent. So rich people have a "monolemma" and it's only the poor that have a dilemma. It must be awful for them, but Bernie will be along soon to ease their troubles.

Are we supposed to pretend this is a bad thing and that we are outraged over it?
