All of China is not turning into a desert. Beijing and northern China experience sand storms annually. This isn't something new at all. However they have gotten worse because of poor agricultural and grazing practices.

I think they started off in Central Asia before spreading elsewhere(anthropology experts feel free to correct me).

East China is definitely prime Asian real estate, as you've said. They've had to deal with a great many incursions from Xiongnu/Mongols, Jurchens/Manchus, and other invaders from harsher parts of Asia.

The Yellow River valley, the beginnings of the Han nation, is not in central Asia. Most Americans and Europeans know very little about East Asian history.

Winter in most of China is pretty harsh. It's a continental climate.
