The KonMari Method is a rather recent method for the US, but has been quite the rage in Japan. It's a very efficient method of tackling the issue of clutter once and for all. I highly recommend this book.
It's basic premise is taking every single item of a particular genre, piling it up in one area and sorting through it by asking yourself "does this item bring me joy?" and discarding it if it does not. Remember, joy can come in many forms - joy from usefulness, joy from simply finding appreciation in form as opposed to function, etc.
