I wish the US would adopt the same laws, however our prisons are already overcrowded. If they jailed all the people who were fat, there would be very little humans left on the outside.

Hmm, turns out it is a pretty good idea. Now if we could only find a jail big enough to hold all of those butter barges...

Fat concentration camps are always a viable option.

Whoa there buddy, these obeasts are not human, so the number of humans wouldn't change.
But seriously, they should put these fat fucks on treadmills in "fat prison" until they have a BMI of <25. The electricity generated could solve the energy crisis and cut greenhouse gasses.

If you read the article they cannot be fined or imprisoned for being fat, they are made to seek medical attention to deal with their obesity.

Even that would be better than allowing them to continue down a path that cost taxpayers like myself billions every year. The problem is, is that the US does nothing about it and even encourages their disgusting behavior. You weigh 400lbs in Japan, you have to seek medical attention and correct the problem, it is not optional. If you live in the US and weigh 400lbs, you get a plaque on the wall of some burger joint for eating a 10lb burger, while your medical and living expenses are covered by disability - a disability you ate yourself into and now everyone pays for. We enable these "people" by basically saying "Even though you have made shit life choices and contribute nothing to society, we will help you continue down this shitty path by supporting you monetarily." It should be the opposite.

Do you know how comical that would be? Fining fat people? Shit it could finance ALL our healthcare and school. 70% of people would have to pay fines until they lose the weight. HAHAHAHAHA. That would be billions. I think we just discovered how to re invigorate our economy.

The fats would have to work, for free 3 hours a day for the government doing jobs that needed to be done. Like cleaning up trash, and other activities if they could not afford the fine.

It is not so much a punitive law (as in you go to jail for being fat), more a social programme to discourage it:

Men with waists measuring more than 33.5 inches or women with waists measuring more than 35.5 inches are considered “at risk” and are referred to counseling, email and phone monitoring and correspondence, along with motivational support. There is no fine or penalty for those who exceed the recommended measurements.

Still, good on them for clearly stating that fat is not acceptable or healthy.

"But the Japanese are so slender that they can't afford to lose weight"

Yeah...because they don't eat tons of food.

Fat shaming doesn't work and yet there is a country where fat shaming is codified into law that has a drastically lower obesity rate.

It's at about 3.5% I believe.
